19TH CENTURY HATS

REGENCY, NAPOLEONIC HATS

Bicorne Hat, Napolean hat, Regency Hats Regency Hat, 19th Century Hat Regency Bonnet
Bicorne

Purchase a wool body from a millinery supply. Steam the body lightly. Use a hat block or your own head for shaping. Pull the wool body
upwards and outwards. Tack and let dry. Add plumage.
Regency Bonnet

Find a small straw hat or purchase a straw body at the millinery store. Either attach a small brim out of the straw or try to tie the hat down with  a ribbon. It might achieve that look. The base to hold up the ribbons should probably made from buckram and attached to the top of the hat. Add ribbons, flowers.
Regency Bonnet

This can be made from fabric covered buckram or straw. Draft top, crown, and brim piece. Cut  fashion fabric(2brims), buckram and lining or straw for each piece. Zig-zag millinery wire onto all outside edges of buckram or straw. Bind the straw immediately to prevent fraying. Hand stitch pieces together. Trim

Romantic Era Bonnet

Same instructions as the Regency Bonnet above right. Lots of trim.
Romantic Era Top Hat

This Romantic hat should be
custom ordered from a costume shop. Or follow instructions from the stovepipe hat below.

CIVIL WAR, 1860'S  HATS

Confederate Kepi

The Kepi's could be made from drafting and cutting wool patterns out. Stitch together. I would order one from a costume shop.
And then add trim.
Confederate Kepi

Same as Kepi on the left.
Stovepipe Hat

To make this hat from scratch, you need a hat block or something in the shape of the crown. Steam a wool body to soften and "pull" onto your form. Tie it down so it does not slip. Stitch crown to top and brim after the crown is dry.
1860 Hat

You can actually order a frame hat like this. Order two. Take one apart for a pattern. Cut and stitch pieces together. Stitch or glue onto hat form. Add
plumage.

1860 Bonnet

Find a small straw hat. Try thrift stores first. Add a tie, ribbon, flowers and bow to hang down the back.
1860 Bonnet

Make a base out of something sturdy. Cover with fashion fabric- outside and inside. Add ties. Sew layers of lace and trim onto the base.
1860 Bonnet

Same idea as the one on the far left.

1890 Women's Hat

Use a witch hat. Push the crown down and secure. This will create a new shorter crown. Cover the brim with fashion fabric. Trim the hat so that the crown is hidden.

It's much easier!
Straw Bonnet

Find a cute small straw hat. Try thrift stores. Some straw can be re-shaped by dampening. But straw hats for the 1890's were a variety of shapes. Mainly add flowers, bows and feathers.
Large Brimmed Hat

Large brimmed hats can be made from double buckram. Cut out a brim. Extremely large brims need wired on the edge to hold shape. Cover with your fashion fabric. The center can stay open by covering it with feathers, bows, netting and flowers.
